MAJOR ISSUES AFFECTING QUALITY OF LIFE IN LA PEŅITA

Introduction La Peņita is considered by many to be the 'service town' for the surrounding colonias of Rincon de Guayabitos, Los Ayala and La Colonia. But those who live there consider it to have the potential to be a delightful tourist destination in its own right.

It has a long sweep of beach which is already used for swimming and water activities by many, but with some corrective measures to prevent erosion, could rival the other beaches on Jaltemba Bay. The addition of the proposed Malecon would be a great enhancement and could provide opportunities for local artists and performers to showcase their wares.

Its weekly market on Thursdays brings visitors pouring in from hotels and bungalows in the nearby towns.

It has a number of small restaurants serving traditional Mexican food as well as an Italian restaurant, Chinese restaurant and there are numerous taco stands throughout the city.

Los Amigos de la Peņita feels that with attention paid to its infrastructure, La Peņita could claim its rightful place as not only a service town but as a tourist destination in its own right. Perhaps then the Ministry of Tourism will be proud to add it to its map showing the major beach towns of Nayarit.
