SEWAGE SYSTEMS
The Issue
SIAPA, a government agency is responsible for the sewage disposal/treatment facility for La Peņita and
the surrounding communities. With the growth of this area and the age of
the treatment facility, there have been problems with this facility functioning
to its capacity.
What's Being Done
Los Amigos is working with SIAPA to solve the sewage disposal
problem and a second treatment facility will be added to the present treatment
facility which will insure proper and continuous disposal of sewage. New
sewage pipes have already been installed throughout La Peņita to insure adequate
delivery of raw sewage to the treatment facility.
Los Amigos de La Peņita has
joined forces with Los Ayala, Rinchon de Guayabitos and the Colonia to make the
government aware of problems when they arise and offer solutions to these
problems to insure a continuous supply of potable water and sewage disposal.

Report from meeting held February 11, 2008
Danny Milski reported the tour of the sewage treatment plant with an engineer from the United States was carried out along with Jeff Bitkoff and there are problems with the functioning of the machines that deal with the solids as only one of the 7 pumps is working and the Chlorinator is malfunctioning and thus Chlorine Gas is a problem. A problem still exists with the treatment facility and sewage going into the estuary. Siapa is aware of the problem and is working at correcting it. Profeca, a national organization for the environment will have no consideration of any person who is responsible for this problem.
Siapa wants everyone to pay their fees so money is available for maintenance and Siapa promises that all complaints will be attended to. Siapa needs to issue a public report when problems arise to make everyone aware of what is happening when water is not available and the sewage treatment facility shuts down.
