WATER SUPPLY
The Issue
SIAPA, a government agency, provides potable water to La Peņita and
the surrounding communities from wells. Due to the growth of this area and the
age of the water supply system, water is not available on a regular basis.
What's Being Done
Los Amigos de La Peņita is working with SIAPA to upgrade the present
system which should be completed by 2009 so potable water will be available on a
regular basis. A new well has been brought into production and new water pipes
are being laid to insure that potable water service will be available on a
regular basis.
Latest Updates on Water Supply
Report from meeting held February 11, 2008
Norah Rodriguez reported that there have been interruptions and delays with finishing the water lines and hopefully 90% will be completed by Holy Week. Requested that all leaks be reported when the valves get opened. The water will flow to the hill one day and flat land the next. Leticia Plascencia wanted us not to get our hopes up too much as one of the workers mentioned to her that their work was slow due to few workers.
Report from meeting held January 15, 2008
Nora reported that the present water supply problem will continue until February 9th at which time the new water storage facility will be completed to receive water from the new well. When the new system is activated there will be more problems with leaking water pipes from the higher water pressure which will be repaired immediately. Funds will be available from the Federal Government to correct problems that arise from the increase in water pressure such as replacing old pipe with new. Los Ayala and Guayabitos will also receive water from the new system. The government has invested 15 million into this project which does not include the distribution system.
Siapa wants everyone to pay their fees so money is available for maintenance and Siapa promises that all complaints will be attended to. Siapa needs to issue a public report when problems arise to make everyone aware of what is happening when water is not available and the sewage treatment facility shuts down.
Report from meeting held December 10, 2007
Nora met with Jorge Rubio from Siapa who showed her the map of the new water line. The line has stopped at the tire shop because those properties are on the Public Zone so Guayabitos and La Peņita has not been done yet until this problem is solved. The new water storage tank half way up the hill should be completed by Jan.1/08. The water from the new well is only for La Peņita but during Semana Santa, water will be given to Guayabitos and Los Ayala for the tourists.
Siapa will have a new calendar available in Jan. showing the dates that our areas will receive water. Raphael reported that the old sewerage treatment plant is being renovated to be put back into fulltime service to assist the present treatment plant. This should eliminate future sewage problems with effluent going into the river. The red flags have been removed from the beach indicating that it is safe to swing in the ocean again.
